Racers Earn Split in Return to Racer Field

MSU Softball fell in extra innings to Loyola Chicago in the home opener before defeating the Ramblers in the night cap
Murray State softball (11-8) made their first home appearance of 2022 on the opening day of the Racer Classic on Thursday afternoon. The Racers broke even in their first day back at Racer Field, pairing a 4-3 extra-innings loss to Loyola Chicago (6-10) with an 8-5 defeat of the Ramblers in the nightcap.
Game One - Murray State 3, Loyola Chicago 4 (9)
Loyola Chicago went up 2-0 after scoring single runs in the top half of the first and second innings.
In the Racers' half of the second, Sierra Gilmore led off with a double to left center and scored when Lily Fischer hit a deep fly to the wall in left that was in-and-out of the left fielder's glove, closing the lead to one. Fischer advanced to third on a fly out to right and then scored when Chloe Jacque laced a RBI single up the middle to even the game at two.
The game remained 2-2 for the remainder of regulation as the Racers threatened with bases loaded in the bottom half of the seventh but were unable to push any across.
In extras, both the Ramblers and the Racers scored their international tie breaker runner as Sierra Gilmore came up with the game-tying RBI single in the eighth.
The Ramblers handled the Racers their first extra-inning loss of the season, scoring the game-winning run on an RBI double in the ninth.
Each team's starters threw the first two innings with the relief pitcher throwing the final seven. Murray State starter Hannah James went 2.0 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. Jenna Veber took the loss in her 7.0 innings of work with two strikeouts.
Game Two - Murray State 8, Loyola Chicago 5
Logan Braundmeier was on fire for the Racers in game two being on base all four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Braundmeier matched her career-high with four runs scored and she also drove in two.
Six Racers had multi-hit games in the night cap led by Lindsey Carroll who was 3-for-4 with a RBI.
The Racers opened the second game with their first five hitters pounding the ball, forcing Loyola Chicago to make a quick pitching change when Murray State had a 4-0 lead.
In the second, freshman Kenadie Gonzalez laced a double to left center for her first collegiate hit and scored on Braundmeier's no-doubter two-run home run.
Loyola Chicago's Abby Brown provided the Ramblers offense for the night hitting two home runs, a two-run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth.
Kamryn Carcich made the first eight outs of the game by way of the strikeout, punching out the side in the first and second innings. She earned her first win of the season, going 5.0 innings. Emma Olejniczak threw 0.1 inning and struck out one. Hannah James picked up the save making her second appearance on the day, striking out four of six batters faced.
The Racers will face Loyola Chicago again tomorrow for day two of the Racer Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
