MSU’s bats come alive in doubleheader sweep
The Murray State softball team won both games of its doubleheader with Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Field in Cookeville, 7-3 and 10-1, in five innings.
In A Nutshell
The Racers picked up big two wins Saturday, scoring a combined 17 runs on a combined 17 hits over both games.
Fast Facts
• The Racers did not get a hit in game one until the fifth inning, but led 2-0 after four complete innings due to Tennessee Tech's struggles in the circle and in the field. In the first four innings alone, Tech issued five walks, hit four batters, committed two errors and had a wild pitch. The Golden Eagles finished the game with eight walks, six batters hit by a pitch and three errors.
• Once the Racers got their first hit in the fifth, they pounded the ball for the final three innings. Murray State ended the game with six total hits including back-to-back triples by Gracie Osbron and Lilly Fischer in the seventh.
• Lily Fischer set a program record Saturday by being hit by a pitch three different times. She has now been hit 18 times this season and 35 in her career and is second all-timer in each category. Ellyn Troup leads both categories in the record books and was hit 21 times during the 2012 season and 45 throughout her career.
• Hannah James and Jenna Veber each picked up a win Saturday moving their respective records to 18-4 and 13-7. James allowed two earned runs on three hits over 7.0 complete innings in game one, while Veber allowed just one hit over the final three innings of game two.
• Murray State had no problem getting its bats going in game two, as Logan Braundmeier led off the second game with the first of 11 hits in the five-inning contest for the Racers.
• Four of Murray State's hits in game two went for extra bases as Osbron had a double and Braundmeier had a home run. Taylor Jackson had the other two multiple-bagger with a double and the first grand slam of her career.
• Murray State is now 34-14-1 on the year and 18-6 in the OVC. Despite the two wins Saturday, the Racers remain one game behind first-place Belmont in the standings with four games remaining, as the Bruins also picked up two wins on the day.
What's Next
The Racers will look to complete the three-game sweep of Tennessee Tech Sunday when the take on the Golden Eagles in a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
