5/4/2022 5:18:00 PM | Women's Golf
The Murray State junior will represent the OVC (May 9-11) at the NCAA Regional in Franklin, Tenn.
After winning the individual title of the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Championship in April, Murray State's Payton Carter is ready to represent the conference and the Racers
at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship Regional in Franklin, Tennessee Monday through Wednesday.
Â
With the new changes to the NCAA event in 2022, Carter is the first OVC player that automatically qualified for the NCAA's as the individual champion. If Carter could advance to the NCAA Finals, she would be the second in OVC history, following Linette Holmslykke in 2019 as she was part of the Murray State team that played in the Auburn Regional. Murray State Hall of Famer, Jessica Grace (Widman), was an alternate to the NCAA's in 2000.
Â
Carter is Murray State's eighth player to win the OVC individual championship. She did it at The Shoals GC – Fighting Joe Course in Muscle Shoals, Alabama on scores of 71-70-73=214 (2-under).
Â
Carter plays a practice round Sunday and has a first-round tee time of 9:50 a.m. Monday from the 10th tee. She will be paired Hollie Muse (East Tennessee) and Annie Kim (Houston). The other three solo players in the event include Mikayla Bardwell (Tennessee), Tara Bettle (UNCG) and Dorota Zalewska (Chattanooga).
Â
The Vanderbilt Legends Club welcomes 12 teams and six individuals to compete in the 54-hole event on the same course that hosted the NCAA Championship in 2012. The field includes four ranked teams, (4) Wake Forest, (9) Alabama, (18) Texas A&M and (21) Duke.
Â
There are six NCAA regionals in 2022 with the others being Albuquerque, New Mexico (UNM Championship Course), Ann Arbor, Michigan (U-M Golf Course), Stillwater, Oklahoma (Karsten Creek Golf Club), Tallahassee, Florida (Seminole Legacy Golf Club) and Stanford, California (Stanford Golf Course).
Â
NCAA Women's Golf Championship will be staged at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 20-25.
