The Murray State men's golf team came home with their best finish of the fall season of fourth place at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark.
A day after setting the program record 15-under-par 269 in the second round, the Racers posted a 290 to finish with a 845 total. The Racers outlasted the other two Missouri Valley Conference teams in the field including Belmont (851) and Evansville (880). Host Arkansas State was the winner at 817 with Memphis (830) and Jacksonville State (834) making up second and third.
Â
The Racers' 19-under-par total is the third-best in program history dating back to 1993, in relation to par, following a 22-under-par 830 and a 20-under-par 832 both at the Racers' home course at Miller Memorial in 2005 and 2019. In events away from their home course, the Racers' 845 is the best for the team since 2006 when they carded an 836 at the Southern Showdown in Branson, Missouri.
Â
Freshman Lennon Albans came home with a spot in ninth place on scores of 71-65-73=209 (-7), while Brady Haake placed 18th on scores of 73-66-73=212 (-4).
Â
The next event for the Racers (Oct 16-17) presents the beginning of a tradition at Murray State as the event that will honor Murray State Hall of Famer, Coach Buddy Hewitt takes place for the first time. The Buddy is a 54-hole event to be played at the course that Coach Hewitt helped make possible in the 1980s when Miller Memorial was built. Hewitt started the MSU men's golf program in 1961 and nurtured it for the next 41 seasons until 2002. Inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 1990, Hewitt was honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 2001.
