MSU again fell to Illinois State, but edged Youngstown State

The Murray State softball team wrapped up play in its own 2023 Racer Classic with a win over Youngstown State and a loss to Illinois State Saturday at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky.

Fast Facts

The Racers scored both of their runs in game one against Youngstown State in the fourth inning on a pair of extra base hits. Bailey Broemmer put the Racers on the board with a triple that scored Lindsey Carroll, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. Broemmer was brought home in the next at bat on a double from Erin Lackey to cap the scoring at 2-0.
Hannah James allowed one hit in the first inning Saturday, which would go on to be the only hit of the game for the Penguins. The redshirt senior pitched a complete game shutout in which she struck out a season-high 11 and walked none.
In game two Illinois State jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a trio of runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
After a Gracie Osbron doubled in the sixth, she was driven home in the next at-bat on a single from Lily Fischer. However, that would be Murray State's lone run of the game, as the Racers fell, 1-0
Murray State ends play in the 2023 Racer Classic at 2-2 and is now 14-9 on the season.

Murray State will have one final tune up before opening its inaugural Missouri Valley Conference schedule next weekend when Western Illinois visits Racer Field Wednesday for a single game beginning at 3 p.m.
