Racers Claim Weaver Championship – Carter Takes Medalist Honor

The Racers won their home tournament for the first time since 2021

The Murray State women's golf team and Payton Carter reached the finish line Tuesday when they won their home event with a 12-shot victory at the Jan Weaver Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky.

The Racers get the win in the event for the first time since 2021 and for the 11^th time in the 20 years of the event since it was first staged in 2003.

MSU carded team scores of 299-298-301=898 and held off defending champion Samford who had rounds of 303-299-308=910. Eastern Michigan was third at 914.

Payton Carter won the Weaver Invitational for the first time after she had previously finished fourth in 2022. She becomes the first Racer to win the title since Moa Folke and Linette Holmslykke shared it in 2017. Carter is the 11^th Racer to win the individual championship as she posted a score line of 72-72-72=216.

All of MSU's five players managed to place in the Top-13 including Eliza Mae Kho (227), McKenna Stahl (229), Alma Garcia (232) and Kaitlyn Zieba (234).

The Jan Weaver Invitational honors the memory of one of the biggest supporters of Murray State University and Racer Athletics. When Jan passed away in 2009, Murray State lost a dear friend. A career teacher and administrator, Weaver served her students for more than 40 years at the high school and college level. Her tenure at Murray State in the College of Education (1985-97) included serving as dean of the department. Along with her husband, Dick, the two helped Racer Athletics back up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields. In 1997, Murray State athletics established an academic center named in honor of the Weavers who provided the funding to build it. The Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997.
