Strong Pitching, Clutch Hitting Secures Series Win and Five Seed

Murray State defeated Southern Illinois 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to secure a winning record in the MVC in year one in the league
Murray State baseball secured a 3-2 win over Southern Illinois in the regular season finale on Saturday at Johnny Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky. The win gives MSU the fifth seed in next week's Missouri Valley Conference tournament as the Racers will play on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT against eighth-seeded Valparaiso.
Carson Garner picked up a vitally clutch two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand the Racers the lead after trailing 2-1. Drew Vogel was able to plate an RBI on a single while Ethan Krizen and Dustin Mercer each had a two-hit day at the ballpark.Â
The Racers pitching staff was able to shutdown the potent Saluki offense as Allen Roulette earned the start and tossed 4.0 shutout innings with five strikeouts while allowing just two hits to SIU. Matt Boynton tossed 2.0 innings on the afternoon, giving up just three hits and two runs.
Reliever Nathan Holler earned the win with 3.0 scoreless innings and four strikeouts while the Salukis could scrap just one hit off of the right hander.
Picked ninth in the preseason poll, the Racers finish MVC play at 14-13 and finish the regular season fifth.Â
