Racers Unable to Overcome Redbirds in Home Finale

Murray State lost to Illinois State 3-1.
The Murray State Racers (14-12, 9-8 MVC) fell to the Illinois State Redbirds (15-15, 10-7 MVC) 3-1 in Murray, Ky. on Saturday Night.
ÂFollowing a pair of losses, the Racers fall to seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference while the Redbirds improve to fifth with the win.
ÂThe Redbirds were the better hitting team, posting a .319 clip compared to the Racers'.279. They also came out on top in kills 64-52, assists 59-46, and digs 60-49. Murray State out-blocked the Redbirds 13-7 and came away with more aces 7-6.Â
ÂThe Navy & Gold came out strong, winning the first set 25-18 and posting 13 kills. Illinois State struck back to take the second 25-19 and held on to win a tight third set 25-22. The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Racers come within a single point 23-22, however, the Redbirds held on to take the match with a 25-23 win.Â
ÂTwo Racers recorded double-digit kills as Federica Nuccio recorded 14 and Lily Burnett had 10. Bailey DeMier put up 38 assists and Dahlia Miller had 14 digs. Morgan McClure led all players with five blocks. Â
ÂAida Shewald and Mekaila Aupiu led all players, putting up 21 kills and 53 assists, respectively. Samantha Bunch recorded 15 digs.   Â
ÂThe Racers travel to Nashville, Tenn. on Tuesday, November 19 for their final regular season matchup at 1 p.m. CT against the Belmont Bruins. The 2024 MVC Volleyball Championship will take place in Cedar Falls, Iowa from November, 23-26. Â
