Katelyn Young earns academic honors after finishing her degree in organizational communications in December while posting the highest points per game in the MVC this season.
Murray State women's basketball's Katelyn Young has been named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Second Team as announced by the league, today.
Â
The Oakwood, Ill. native completed her bachelor's degree in organizational communications in December of 2023. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in human development and leadership at Murray State.
Â
Young currently leads the MVC with 19.69 points per game and has posted 11 double-doubles this season. She is 30 points away from becoming the program's all-time leader in scoring.
Â
The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CSC (College Sports Communicators) standards for Academic All-America nominations. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically and must be enrolled at their institution at the time of nomination either as undergraduates or graduate students. [The 12-month residency requirement for undergraduate transfers is no longer required.] An undergraduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and a graduate student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as both an undergraduate and a grad student unless they are in their first semester as a graduate student and don't have an established graduate GPA.
Â
Young joins the Racers as they go to the MVC Hoops in the Heartland as the sixth seed and will face the 11th seed Bradley, Thursday.
