Murray State football plays their spring practice finale Thursday at Roy Stewart Stadium
Murray State Football is set to stage the annual spring game Thursday at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky, as new head coach Jody Wright and his staff finishes their first period of evaluation of the roster for 2024. Admission is free.
Â
A fun evening of activities is planned at Stewart Stadium (March 28) with a kid's clinic beginning at 6 p.m. on the playing field. Kids of all ages are invited to come down on the field for some football fun and interaction with the MSU football student-athletes.
Â
Murray State's favorite thoroughbred, Racer 1, and new student jockey, Madison Presley, will also attend the spring game.
Â
Several Murray State Greek organizations will be competing in a punt-pass-kick competition and a relay race.
Â
Along the way, the Racers' football team will play a full contact game and touchdown celebrations will be encouraged, unlike the regular season.
Â
"The goal for the spring game is to get out there and have a great experience for our team and the fans," Coach Wright stated. "We want to finish spring practice the right way with some effective and clean football. Our guys have been building to this game for a month and this is their chance to compete and I think this game will go a long way in getting people excited about the 2024 season. We are also excited to get our team around the kids that are growing up as Racer fans. We'll have fun during that time for sure."
Â
The transition from the moment Wright was announced as Murray State's 20th head coach on Jan. 10 has been steady and focused. With his coaching staff now working in earnest for 2024 and beyond, the Racers went into the spring training season with all positions open for competition.
Â
"This spring we wanted to keep everything basic and simple and find the guys who can make winning plays and display the winning habits that will help us win football games," Wright said. "There is no such thing as a depth chart this month, because everyone started from the same point. We have gone back to the basic fundamentals of the game and that has been good for our roster. Thursday night, we want everyone to go out on the field and show what they can do."
Â
Loyal Murray State Football supporters, Bud Byers and Leon Owens will be the honorary coaches. Owens is currently serving as chair of the Murray State University Board of Regents.
Â
The 2024 season will be a spectacle as the program celebrates its 100th season of collegiate football with a 12-game schedule featuring six home games at Roy Stewart Stadium. The Racers' 52nd home opener at Stewart Stadium has the Butler Bulldogs making their first visit to Murray (Sept. 7). Murray State Family Weekend (Sept. 14) has MSU hosting Mississippi Valley State.
Â
The Racers' second season in the Missouri Valley Football Conference begins with a road game (Sept. 28) at North Dakota, before coming home (Oct. 5) to take on South Dakota. After a game at Indiana State (Oct. 12), Murray State's homecoming game (Oct. 19) is against Illinois State. October ends with MSU hosting North Dakota State (Oct. 26), before playing at South Dakota State for the first time (Nov. 2). MSU wraps up the MVFC season at home (Nov. 9) against Missouri State and at Southern Illinois (Nov. 23).
