Racers Become MVC Champions

The Racers defeat Illinois State to make them first time MVC Champions
Murray State women's tennis became MVC Tournament Champions on Sunday afternoon after defeating Illinois State 4-1. The Racers are still undefeated in league play, going 10-0 for the spring season. This is the first tournament title for the Racers since 2015.
The Racers headed into doubles play and quickly secured the point to give them the 1-0 lead over the Redbirds. All Conference Flight Three Doubles team Paola Campigotto/Marit Kreugel earned the first win for the Racers, defeating their opponents in a dominant 6-1 match. Emma Honore/Natalie Slezakova clinched the doubles point with their win at the number one spot over Lana Caculovic/Tijana Zlatanovic, 6-4.
The Racers went into singles play and battled with Illinois State. Senior Sarah Bureau dropped her match to Caculovic, but it was no match for the other Racers. Freshman Varya Alexeyeva wrapped up her second set, edging out her opponent for a 7-5 win. Slezakova sent the Racers to 3-0 when she defeated Sofia Rodrigo 6-1 in her final set. Honore and Kreugel were sent to a third set, meanwhile number one singles Valeria Chaikovakaia was battling Tijana Zlatanovic in her third set.
Chaikovskaia defeated Zlatanovic in the first set, 6-2, but then dropped the second set 2-6. In the final third set, Chaikovskaia bounced back. The freshman clinched the match win for the Racers, making them MVC Tournament Champions.
The Racers will head to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. The selection show will take place on April 29th at 5:30 p.m. CST.
