A nine-run sixth inning propelled Murray State to a seven-inning victory.
The Racers handled the Bradley Braves in a 13-0 run-rule shutout in seven innings on Friday at Dozer Park in Peoria, Illinois. Friday's run rule extends Murray State's winning streak to seven-straight games.
Through the first two games of the series, the Racers have scored 15 of their 22 runs in the sixth inning; six runs were scored in the frame in the series opener and nine came across the plate in the sixth on Friday.
After a scoreless opening frame from both sides, Murray State sprung ahead with Taylor Howell's sacrifice fly in the second to score Jonathan Hogart. Two more scoreless frames went by in the third and fourth before the Racers plated another run in the fifth on an RBI knock from Riley Hawthorne, scoring Howell to make it a 2-0 game.
The Racers exploded for a nine-run frame in the sixth where nine batters reached base safely, including seven-straight base hits for MSU. After consecutive singles from Carson Garner and Hogart, Dan Tauken scored Garner on a single followed by a knock from Howell to score Hogart. Riley Hawthorne loaded the bases with a hit before all runners advanced on a balk, resulting in Tauken scoring a run.
Ethan Krizen delivered with a three-run home run to put the Racers ahead 8-0 for his third of the year. Parker Estes and Drew Vogel reached via base hit and a walk before Dustin Mercer scored Estes with a double to left field. Tauken picked up his second and third RBIs of the inning with a base hit through the left side to cap off Murray State's inning where 13 Racers came to bat.
Estes capped off the day with a two-run home run to extend MSU's lead to 13-0 for his sixth long ball of the year in the seventh inning.
Jacob Pennington earned his fifth win of the year after tossing six scoreless innings allowing just three hits, two walks and striking out six Bradley batters. It was the graduate's second scoreless outing of the season.
Tauken and Krizen matched game highs with three RBIs each. Tauken also tied a game-high three hits with Hawthorne for the day. Howell, Mercer and Estes also picked up multi-hit games and Hogart, Howell, Estes and Krizen each scored a pair of runs.
The Racers look to sweep Bradley in the series finale on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. CT at Dozer Park in Peoria, Illinois.
