Strong Showing for Racers in Rust Buster Match Play
2/11/2025 2:32:00 PM | Women's Golf
The Racers defeated Akron to take third place in their spring opener in the Sunshine State
The Murray State Racers women's golf team came home with a third-place finish after a 3.5 to 1.5 victory over the Akron Zips Tuesday at the Rust Buster Match Play at King's Ridge Country Club in Clermont, Fla.
Â
Against the Zips, the Racers produced wins from Elin Tynan, Tina von Arx and Eliza Mae Kho and got a half point from Patti Patterson.
Â
The experience this week in the Orlando area is a positive one for the Racers, who played three matches in about a 36-hour period and came away with wins over Akron and Toledo and a close defeat to the top seed, Omaha.
Â
"I am pleased with the progress we made over the three matches here in Florida and with our improvement since the semester began," said Murray State Head Coach Philip Nelson. "To win two of three matches, one very handily, and then take a good Omaha team down to the end was a great start to the spring. These girls showed a lot of toughness and aggression and they are developing quickly. It's a great feeling to have our team playing this well early in the spring."
Â
The rest of MSU's spring season continues (Feb. 25-26) in Phoenix at the GCU Invitational. In March, the Racers appear at the Chris Banister Golf Classic (March 9-11) in Oneonta, Alabama and (March 24-25) at the Georgia State Invitational in Johns Creek. The Racers host their own Jan Weaver Invitational (April 5-6) at Miller Memorial Golf Course before tackling the Missouri Valley Conference Championship (April 13-15) in Waterloo, Illinois.
