Womens Tennis clinch a win over Hilltoppers
Murray State women's tennis battled past Western Kentucky in a tight match up Sunday, securing a 4-3 road win in Bowling Green.
The Racers started strong in doubles, with Varya Alexeyeva and Paola Campigotto cruising to a 6-2 win on court No. 3. However, the Hilltoppers responded with wins over Yu Kikawa/ Yuna Kadowaki and Valeria Chaikovskaia/Bruna Melato on courts No. 1 and 2 to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Murray State quickly bounced back, claiming four of the first six singles sets. Yuna Kadowaki fell 6-4, 6-1, but straight-set victories from Chaikovskaia and Alexeyeva put the Racers ahead. Melato battled but fell 7-6, 6-2, allowing Western Kentucky to reclaim the lead.
With two matches left, the Racers needed both to clinch the win. Senior Campigotto delivered under pressure, rallying for a three-set victory to even the score at 3-3. With the match tied 3-3, a freshman, this time Kikawa, once again found herself in the spotlight for the second straight weekend after Melato clinched the win against Central Arkansas last week. Kikawa fought through two grueling tiebreakers, saving two set points in the second before sealing a dramatic 10-8 victory.
Murray State has now won four of its last five and will face Jacksonville next before opening Missouri Valley Conference play on March 22.
