Racers Claim 3rd Place Over Austin Peay at Sweetens Cove Match Play

The Racers went 13.5 to 4.5 in three matches in South Pittsburg, Tenn.

The Murray State men's golf team put a wrap on a successful three days with a win over old rival Austin Peay in the third place match Wednesday at the Sweetens Cove Intercollegiate in South Pittsburg, Tenn.

The Racers defeated the Governors 4.5 to 1.5 as they got wins from Rocco Zakutney, Trey Lewis, Trey Wall and Lennon Albans, with a halve from Jay Nimmo.

Sweetens Cove was a tremendous setting for the Racers to come out of the week with a 13.5 to 4.5 lead in points in head-to-head matches. MSU defeated Bowling Green 6-0 in the quarterfinals and got today's win over APSU, with tie of No. 1 seed Miami in a semifinal, a match that only a tiebreak count-back kept the Racers from having a chance of advancing to the title match.

Next up for the Racers is their third-straight appearance at the Hoosier Collegiate (April 5-6) in Bloomington, Indiana. MSU's Jay Nimmo was the medalist there in 2023.
