Racers Fall Despite Outhitting Panthers

MSU Returns Saturday for Game Two
The Murray State Racers (14-23, 4-12 MVC) fell to the UNI Panthers (23-11, 11-3 MVC) 13-5 in the opening game of their weekend series on Friday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.Â
The Racers outhit the Panthers 11-9 and each team was charged with one error.
After there were no runs in the first inning, the Panthers jumped ahead with eight runs in the second inning and added one more in the third. The Panthers' second inning was capped off by a Kate Lappe three-run homer that put them ahead 8-0.
The Racers came alive in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to make it 9-5. Bailey Broemmer got things going with a stand-up double that scored a pair of runs before stealing third and scoring on an error by the catcher. Taylor Franzen added a double of her own before being sent home by a single from Katy Huels. Ailey Schyck added another run, scoring Kenley Minor on an RBI single, however, Hannah Sutton was thrown out on the play, bringing the big inning to an end.
Northern Iowa responded with one run of its own in the fourth and added three more in the fifth to cap off a run-rule win for the Panthers. Â
Parker Holcombe and Hannah Sutton led the Racers with two hits each, Sutton went 2-2 on the day with a walk. Katy Huels went 1-3 with an RBI to push her hitting streak all the way to 13 games. Kenley Minor, Riley Jestadt, Kayleigh White, Bailey Broemmer, and Taylor Franzen had one hit each and Broemmer led the team with a pair of RBI.
Four different Racers spent time in the circle with Karlye Graber (5-8) taking the loss after allowing four earned runs. Anna Wischnowski (13-5) was awarded the win after allowing two earned runs and striking out three in four innings of work. Â
The Racers and Panthers are back in action tomorrow for a Saturday matinee with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT. Â
