Murray State fell in straight sets Friday to UIC at Credit Union One Arena in Chicago, Ill.Â
The Racers (2-16, 0-6 MVC) took the Flames (7-11, 3-3 MVC) to extra points in the opening set, but could not convert four set points, falling 29-27, then 25-17, 25-15.
The Racers trailed the Flames 13-11 in the first set before a 4-0 run, capped by kills from Mija Pristovnik and Anne Makowski, put them in front 15-13. Two more Pristovnik kills and a block from the sophomore outside hitter and Maezi Snyder stretched the lead to 22-18 in a frame that featured 14 ties and four lead changes, and a Makowski kill gave Murray State set point at 24-21. UIC scored three straight to pull even, and after Lily Evans' kill put the Racers back in front 25-24, the Flames took four of the final six points to steal the opener.
Evans delivered one of the match's most efficient performances, finishing with 10 kills on 20 swings without an error for a .500 clip and adding an ace for a team-high 11 points. Makowski matched her with 10 kills and added seven digs, while Pristovnik posted nine kills on a .368 hitting percentage, 11 digs and two blocks while handling 40 of the Racers' 67 serve receptions.
The Navy & Gold opened the second set with a 2-0 lead behind a Paige Brock ace and went up 9-7 on a solo block from Teodora Cickovic. UIC answered with four straight points, but the Racers erased a 13-10 deficit with a 3-0 run that included a Ceren Durak kill, and a Burnett kill knotted the score at 14. Pristovnik, who had four kills in the frame, pulled Murray State within one at 16-15 and again at 17-16 before the Flames scored eight of the final nine points.
UIC jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the third set, but the Racers responded with a 3-0 run behind a pair of Makowski kills to cut the deficit to 11-7. Murray State pushed back midway through the frame, but an Evans kill, two Flames attack errors, and an Evans ace made it 16-13 before UIC scored the next five points to close out the sweep.
Brock and Katie Titus split the setting duties, finishing with 18 and 16 assists, respectively, and Titus added a team-high-tying eight digs among non-attackers. Freshman libero Ada Tamturk, who has played in all 64 of Murray State's sets this season, recorded seven digs and went 12-for-12 on serve receive, before leaving the third set with an injury.Â
Murray State hit .311 in the opening set and .219 for the match, but UIC hit .393 with four players recording 11 or more kills and held a 7-4 edge in blocks.
The Racers return to action Oct. 15 against Belmont at Racer Arena.
