Anceline Brackman made history Sunday at Ohio State, firing a perfect 600 in air rifle with all 60 shots counting as centers, setting the NCAA record for air rifle centers and leading Murray State to a 4732 aggregate and a first-place finish over UTEP, VMI and VMI's women's team.
Three shooters had previously recorded a 600 with 59 centers, making Brackman the first in NCAA history to post all 60. Her 600 is the 65th in NCAA history and the first by a Murray State shooter. It breaks the program air rifle record of 599, which she tied one week earlier against Jacksonville State. She shot 100 in all six series, and with every shot scoring as a center, her mark can be matched but not surpassed. Brackman also set career highs with a 590 (35 centers) in smallbore and a 1190 aggregate with 95 centers to lead all competitors.
In air rifle, Caroline Martin placed third with a 596 (48 centers), while Ashley Haymond and Emma Lawrence each shot 591 and Mallory Johnson added a 590. Murray State totaled 2378 in air rifle, one point behind UTEP's 2379, and led the field with 192 centers.
The Racers led all teams in smallbore with a 2354. Lea Soulé posted the top smallbore score of the match with a career-high 595 (41 centers), and Brackman (590), Johnson (585) and Lawrence (584) also placed in the top five.
Murray State placed four shooters in the top six of the aggregate standings: Brackman (1190), Martin (1178), Johnson (1175) and Lawrence (1175). Haymond finished eighth with a 1171.
"We needed to get better," head coach Alan Lollar said. "We got better."
Up next: Murray State returns to action Nov. 14 at home against Georgia Southern.
Final team standings: Murray State 4732 (2354 SB / 2378 AR), UTEP 4701 (2322 SB / 2379 AR), VMI 4616 (2286 SB / 2330 AR), VMI (W) 4566 (2245 SB / 2321 AR)
