Murray State Improves to 9-7 in MVC Play
The Murray State Racers (18-19, 9-7 MVC) defeated the Bradley Braves (11-28, 5-12 MVC) 4-3 in eight innings to clinch a Missouri Valley Conference series on Saturday at Racer Field.
Following the series win, the Racers are in fifth in the MVC standings, in the picture for the six-team MVC tournament. Meanwhile, the Braves are ninth in the conference standings.
Murray State jumped out to an early lead in the opening inning, as Kynadee Warner put the Racers on the board, scoring on a single by Parker Holcombe.
The Braves tied the game in the third with a sacrifice fly and scored on a bunt single in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. They pushed the lead to 3-1 in the sixth via a solo home run.
The Navy & Gold mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Bailey Broemmer notched her second home run of the weekend and tied the game 3-3 with a deep shot to right field.
After reliever Bre Haislip ended the top of the seventh with a strikeout and the Racers could not score in the bottom of the inning, the Braves threatened to score in the top of the eighth. Bradley put a pair of runners in scoring position, but they were unable to capitalize, as the top of the inning ended on a flyout. In the bottom of the eighth, Parker Holcombe got on base with a double down the left-field line. Kenley Minor delivered the winning blow, a shallow single to right field that scored Holcombe and clinched the series.
Bre Haislip (9-6) earned the win in relief, pitching two innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out two. Raylee Roby pitched 3 1/3 innings as the starter and gave up two earned runs, and Karlye Graber pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and allowed one earned run.
Bailey Broemmer went 1-for-3 with a home run and a pair of RBI, Parker Holcombe went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Kenley Minor went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kynadee Warner, Adison Hicks, Ava Ozment, and Katy Huels had one hit each.
