Eddie Hicks enters his first season as the cornerbacks coach at Murray State, after spending the 2014 season as defensive quality control at California.
Prior to his time with the Golden Bears, Hicks served as a graduate assistant at Cincinnati for defensive backs during the 2013 season. That season, the Bearcats’ defense was one of the best in the country, ranking in the top 10 nationally in both rushing defense (6th, 104.5 ypg) and total defense (9th, 315.6 ypg). Cincinnati was also among the top 30 teams in 10 of the 11 primary defensive categories tracked in the national stats, including 14th in scoring defense (21.0 ppg), third-down conversion percentage defense (33.1%) and first downs defense (230); 23rd in sacks (2.69 pg) and red-zone defense (76.5%); 25th in team passing efficiency defense (116.75); 26th in tackles for loss (6.80 pg); and 29th in passing yards allowed (211.2 ypg).
He broke into the coaching ranks as a defensive graduate assistant at Alcorn State in 2012, helping a defense that led the Southwest Athletic Conference in pass defense and ranked fourth in the FCS, allowing a mere 156.0 yards per game.
Hicks was a four-year letter winner from 2006-2009 as a defensive back at Southern Miss, before earning his bachelor’s degree from the school in business administration in 2010. Hicks had 13 career interceptions and started his final 39 collegiate games. He was a first-team All-Conference USA selection and team captain as a 2009 senior. That season he registered five picks, with his 0.38 interceptions per game tying for fourth in the league and tying for 32nd nationally.
Hicks earned second-team All-CUSA honors as a 2008 junior and was on the conference’s all-freshman team in 2006. The Eagles played in bowl games during each of Hicks’ five seasons in the program, including his redshirt freshman campaign in 2005. Southern Miss was victorious twice in the New Orleans Bowl in 2005 over Arkansas State and in 2008 against Troy. In 2006, USM defeated Ohio in the GMAC Bowl during the same season in which Hicks’ returned his first career interception 87 yards for a touchdown against East Carolina.
Hicks spent his prep career at Clarksdale High School in Mississippi, where he was a Mississippi/Alabama High School All-Star as a senior in 2005. In 2004, he earned first-team All-State honors and served as a team captain for a 4A State runner-up squad during his junior campaign.
Hicks and his wife, JoTrina, have two sons – Eddie IV and Jayvion.
