Amir Abdur-Rahim is in his second season as an assistant coach at Murray State and brings a love for the game and outstanding experience as a player.
He brings a rare combination of professionalism and practical experience to the MSU program.
"I do feel I can relate to how the game is played today," said Abdur-Rahim, who was a student-athlete for Billy Kennedy as recently as 2004. "That's certainly an advantage and I enjoy the one-on-one aspect of coaching our student-athletes. It is very satisfying to see them improve."
Abdur-Rahim spent two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Racers before briefly taking a position on the prep level at Wheeler High School in his hometown of Atlanta, Ga. Just about the time he was ready to begin the school year there in 2008, he got a call from Billy Kennedy to come back to MSU and he accepted.
"I was looking forward to teaching and coaching on the high school level, but I'm very happy to be at Murray State," Abdur-Rahim said. "In my heart I've always wanted to coach at the collegiate level."
His history with Kennedy dates back to when he was recruited to play for him at Southeastern Louisiana University in 2001.
"I've enjoyed my association with Coach Kennedy over the years," Abdur-Rahim said. "He was a great coach to play for and it has been the same working along side him as part of his staff. Coach allows me to take a lot of responsibility within the framework of our program, and he's allowed me to grow and mature as a coach."
Abdur-Rahim enjoyed an outstanding career at SLU and was a large part in helping build the Lions' program. During his SLU career from 2001-04, he was a three-time All-Southland Conference selection and led the Lions in scoring three-straight seasons and finished as the school's seventh all-time scorer with 1,282 points. More importantly, he helped turn a program that had a 7-20 record to one that went 20-9 and won a regular season conference championship in only three years.
"Being able to play and also coach alongside Coach Kennedy has been a blessing." Abdur-Rahim said. "His leadership and character are the two aspects I admire the most about him."
Amir earned a degree in general business in 2004 from Southeastern Louisiana and a master's degree in organizational communication from Murray State in 2008
A native of Atlanta, Ga., he is one of 13 children in his family.
