The 2016-17 season for assistant coach James Kane marks his sixth with the Murray State men’s basketball program.
Kane is excellent in many areas of basketball including technology as he directs the video efforts for the Racers. He is also heavily involved in game planning, player development, recruiting and summer camps.
He spent his first four seasons with MSU as assistant to Steve Prohm (now at Iowa State) and last season for Matt McMahon. Kane and McMahon came into the Racer program as assistants in 2011.
Before Murray State, Kane was Alabama’s video coordinator from 2009-11 and served in the same role for two seasons at VCU, all under Head Coach Anthony Grant.
Kane has been part of 121 wins with the Racers. He was part of MSU’s 31-2 campaign in 2011-12 in which the Racers were ranked for 13 weeks and were in the top-10 for the first time in school history. MSU was the only undefeated NCAA D-I road team and was the final undefeated team at 23-0. The Racers were seeded No. 6 in the NCAA Tournament and posted the program’s third win by defeating Colorado State. The Racers set a school and Ohio Valley Conference record with 31 wins.
In 2013-14, Kane was part of the Racer program that was 23-11 and won the CollegeInsider Tournament championship. In 2014-15, the Racers won 25 straight games and became the first in school history and only the second all-time to go undefeated in the Ohio Valley Conference at 16-0. MSU won the OVC regular season title and a pair of games in the National Invitational Tournament and finished 29-6.
Kane was part of the program at VCU where he helped the Rams to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Kane was graduate assistant at VCU in the 2006-07 season where he was part of the effort that saw VCU make the NCAA Tournament and upset Duke in the first round.
Prior to getting into the college game, Kane spent the 2005-06 season as an intern for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats in basketball operations and scouting analysis.
A native of Oakland Park, Fla., Kane graduated in 2005 from the University of Florida as a merit scholar with a degree in sport management, and a minor in business administration.
In 2006, he earned a master’s degree in sport management from VCU’s Center for Sport Leadership.
