Amber Guffey returned to the Murray State women’s basketball team after a year absence, but this time she is serve as the Racers’ graduate assistant manager in 2010. She is responsible for assisting with on campus recruiting, coordinating academic support and film exchange.
Guffey spent a season overseas playing professionally for Residence Walferdange (Luxembourg). In her rookie season she averaged 24.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Guffey shot 54 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc while helping her team to the Diekrich League playoffs.
The Albany, Ky., native left the Racers after the 2008-09 season after a stellar four-year career. She helped pace MSU to the 2007-08 OVC Tournament Championship and then to the schools first OVC Regular-Season Championship in 2008-09.
Guffey is currently ranked No. 3 on the MSU All-Time Scoring Charts, with 1,877 points, just 130 behind teammate Ashley N. Hayes (2,007). The three-time All-OVC selection ranks in the top-10 in 17 career categories, including six top spots. She is first in minutes played (3,873), games played (123), assists (512), free throws made (587), three-point field goals made (210) and three-point field goals attempted (530).
Guffey was a stand-out in the classroom as well, becoming the first player in Murray State history to earn CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year honors in 2008-09 and Academic All-America First Team honors after posting a 3.9 GPA for her undergraduate career. The three-time OVC All-Tournament team pick, also earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District 4 honors in 2006-07 (3rd team) and 2007-08 (2nd team).
Besides her national recognition for academic achievement, Guffey was named the OVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007-08, earned three OVC Medals of Honor (4.0 GPA) and was named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll all four seasons.
Before joining the Racers program, Guffey put her name all over the Kentucky State record book as a standout for Clinton County. She set a single-season state record for assists (325) her senior season and finished her prep career ranked 40th in the record books for points (2,648) and second in assists (1,272).
Guffey earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Murray State in December 2008 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in human development and leadership.
