Entering his 10th season at Murray State, assistant coach DongPing Fang has already left his mark on the Racer program.
Providing a sparkling combination of international experience and proven success at the American collegiate level, Fang utilized his expertise and knowledge of the sport in China to bring five players to Murray State who proved themselves to be among the best in the conference in the 2002-2003 and 2008 seasons.
Aside from his international recruiting skills, Fang has a perspective of the game that helps bring out the best in all of his players through discipline, dedication, and teamwork. As a former head coach, he is able to teach technique as well as strategy through his unique insight.
“Coach Ping knows volleyball really well,” said MSU head coach David Schwepker. “He is an invaluable person who comes up with great systems for our team: different strategies, different technical information, and how to beat the other teams.”
Fang came to Murray State from Manhattanville College, an NCAA Division III school in Purchase, N.Y., where he served as head coach for two seasons.
In 2000, his last season there, Fang led the Valiants to a school-record 21 wins en route to a 21-11 season with a 6-1 second-place mark in the Skyline Conference, bringing Manhattanville to the conference championship finals.
Fang was an assistant professor in the physical education department at Baoding Normal University in China, teaching volleyball, soccer and basketball from 1986 to 1992.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Hebei Normal University in China in 1986 and his master’s degree in physical education from Brooklyn College in 1999.
Fang is married to ZhaoXin Feng, and they have a daughter, Kaylee, 10, and a son, Nathan, 6.
