Nico Azpilcueta joins the Murray State baseball staff as a Graduate Assistant - Baseball Operations ahead of the 2026-27 season, arriving in Murray after a playing career that carried him from California junior college baseball to All-Region honors in the Coastal Athletic Association.
Azpilcueta spent the 2026 season at Troy, appearing in 18 games with eight starts for the Trojans. Ahead of his Senior season, Azpilcueta was named to the NCBWA Preseason First-Team All-America team. He made his Troy debut in the first game of a doubleheader against Mercer on Feb. 14, collecting two hits with a double, an RBI and a run scored, then hit his first home run for the Trojans in the nightcap, driving in two runs and scoring twice in a win. He added a second home run against No. 5 Georgia on April 28 and finished the season with seven hits, two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored.
His 2025 season at Stony Brook ranks among the most productive in that program's history. Azpilcueta earned All-CAA First Team and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team honors after leading the Coastal Athletic Association and ranking 24th nationally with 20 home runs, a total that stands second in Stony Brook's single-season record book. He ranked second in the conference with 61 RBI, third with a 1.101 OPS, and slashed .320/.390/.711 while starting all 52 games as one of two Seawolves to do so. Azpilcueta reached base in the first 39 games of the season, recorded 22 multi-RBI games and 18 multi-hit games, and homered in four consecutive games from March 25 to April 4. He closed the year with two home runs and five RBI during a season-ending sweep of Monmouth.
Before Stony Brook, Azpilcueta spent the 2024 season at Ohlone College, where he was named an ABCA/Rawlings Pacific Association First Team All-American and a First Team All-State selection. He hit .342 with 12 home runs, 10 doubles, two triples and 28 walks in 152 at-bats while seeing time at first base, third base and designated hitter.
Azpilcueta began his college career at Saint Mary's, redshirting in 2022 before appearing in three games on the mound in 2023. He tossed scoreless innings against Pacific on April 15 and at Fresno State on May 18.
A native of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Azpilcueta attended Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif., where he hit .436 with six home runs as a senior and earned All-Mission League First Team honors. He is the son of Maria Cavalluzzi and George Azpilcueta and has one brother, Dante.
