When Turner won the 600-yard dash in the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in 1970, he became the first OVC athlete and the only Murray State athlete to win an NCAA title. Turner was named to the All-America track team six times, three times in the indoor 600, twice in the 400-yard dash, and once as a member of the MSU mile relay team.
Turner won the 440-yard dash in the OVC Championships four times and the 220-yard dash three times. He was the OVC’s Track Man of the Year in 1971. He still holds the conference record in the 440-yard dash at 46.4. His MSU record in that event, 45.4, has never been approached. He was also a member of both the 440 and mile relay teams that hold Murray records of 40.6 and 3:06.3, respectively.
Turner was selected four times to the United States team to compete against the Russian team. He placed in three of the meets but was injured during warm-ups in the fourth and couldn’t participate. He was a member of the United States team in the last Olympic Games in Munich.
A native of St. Louis, Turner coaches track at Murray High School.
