Win streak OVC streak end for Racers as Murray State falls at SEMO 3-0

Murray State's school-record volleyball win streak came to an end at 14 matches, and its Ohio Valley Conference regular-season win streak stopped at 13 as a determined Southeast Missouri State team hit its way past the league-leading Racers 3-0 tonight in Cape Girardeau, Mo., 30-26, 30-25, 30-15.
The Racers (14-5, 8-1 OVC), the top-hitting team in the conference, could muster an attack percentage of .207, having as many kills as errors in Game 3, while the homestanding Otahkians (7-16, 6-4 OVC) hit a blistering .359 with only eight errors in the three games.
Murray State remains atop the OVC standings at 8-1, 1-1/2 matches ahead of second-place Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State, each at 6-2. For SEMO, the win solidified its hold on sixth place at 6-4, a full two matches ahead of seventh-place Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois, each at 3-5. The top six teams qualify for the OVC Championship Tournament.
Murray State was led by sophomore outside hitter Paige Sun -- named OVC Defensive Player of the Week this week -- with 19 of MSU's 41 kills. She hit .357 for the match, with only four errors in 42 attacks.
Freshman outside hitter Lilli han added eight kills for the Racers, and led the defense with 11 digs. Sun had nine digs, while junior defensive specialist Casandra Ersel had eight.
Junior middle blocker Danielle Sutterer and freshman middle blocker Katie Kemezys each had two blocks to lead the Racers, while junior outside hitter Kimberly Bunnage served up a team-high two aces. Sophomore setter Nikki Wong handed out a match-high 32 assists for MSU.
Southeast Missouri was paced by 12 kills from Suzanne Gundlach and 10 from Sarah Frost. Jamie Baumstark and Ashley Smith each had a match-high four blocks for the Otahkians, while Jessica Wilfong had three. Gundlach also had a match-high 13 digs, while Baumstark and Smith served up three aces apiece. Emily Scannell handed out 29 assists.
This match opened a five-match road tour for the Racers. Murray State visits OVC rival Eastern Illinois (6-17, 3-5 OVC) on Friday at 7 p.m. and will be off for a week before traveling to Tennessee Tech on Oct. 31.
