
Young Writers Take On Murray State vs. Tennessee State

In early January, Racer men's and women's basketball challenged fourth and fifth graders at Murray Middle and Southwest Calloway Elementary to write about great achievements in their lives by participating in the Racer Basketball Writing Contest. Three winners were chosen out of the nearly 200 essays submitted, with Savannah Richey winning from Murray Middle and both Slade Harrison and Kirsten Houston winning from Southwest Calloway Elementary.
Savannah and Kirsten joined Murray State Athletics Assistant AD Dave Winder and members of the local media on press row at the Jan. 9 game against Tennessee State to write game recap stories from their perspective. The stories follow below.
Savannah Richey - 4th Grade, Murray Middle School
MSU Racers slowed to a trot by Tennessee State
The Murray State Racers were held back and not able to play their running game on February 9th at CFSB. The Racers scored 68 points, but the Tennessee State Tigers managed 72 points which stopped MSU's undefeated season.
The crowd jumped and cheered with all of MSU's baskets. Isaiah Canaan had the most hoops making 31. Other top scorers were Donte Poole with 10; Ivan Aska and Latreze Mushatt both brought in 8. Top rebounders were Latreze Mushatt with 8, and Ed Daniel, Ivan Aska and Isaiah Canaan all with 6.
In this exciting game, the Racers were tied with the Tigers four times. The lead, however, changed nine times with MSU leading by as much as 15 points, but the biggest lead the Tigers ever had was only by 5 points. Isaiah Canaan led the racers with 31 points while, Robert Covington led the Tennessee State Tigers with a score of 17 points.
The last 20 seconds were very intense. With TSU leading (69-68) Tiger guard Wil Peters lost the ball out of bounds with 11.4 seconds to go. Then Peters stole Murray State's inbound pass. With 9.7 seconds left, Ed Daniel fouled TSU's Covington . He missed both free throws. With TSU leading 69-68, Isaiah Canaan lost the ball while driving to the basket. He was called for a foul on the play. TSU's Kenny Moore sank both free throws to make the score 71-68. With 3.5 seconds remaining, Ed Daniel's inbound pass sailed the length of the floor going out of bounds. Poole committed the final foul as TSU hit a free throw for the final score of 72-68.
Kirsten Houston - 5th Grade, Southwest Calloway Elementary
RACERS DOWN BUT NOT OUT
The Murray State Racers went into their 24th game of the season Thursday night against Tennessee State Tigers 23-0 but came out 23-1. It was the first loss in the four month winning streak for the #9 ranked Racers. The Racers started strong on their home court and kept their ground for most of the game.
Isaiah Canaan did it again. He was the Racers' top scorer making 31 points with 7 being 3-pointers. The only other double digit points of the night coming from Donte Poole with 10. Latreze Mushatt led the team with 8 rebounds with Ed Daniel, Ivan Aska, and Isaiah Canaan each adding 6.
With 4 seconds left in the first half, Isaiah Canaan made a 3-pointer and the crowd went wild. This gave the Racers a 40-33 lead.
The lead switched back and forth during the second half. With 4:25 left to play, the score was tied 62-62. Then the Tigers sprang forward and never looked back. In the last 11 seconds, the Racers had the ball three times with a chance to take the lead or tie the Tigers. All three times they were unable to get a shot off. The last few Tigers' free throws of the game ended the Racers' undefeated season. The final score being 72-68.
The Racers almost had a record number of fans with 8,668 in attendance at the CFSB Center. The Murray State Racers will still try to keep their fantastic season going at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night (Feb. 11) when they host Austin Peay.
