Racers beat Jacksonville State 3-0, advance to OVC championship

The Murray State volleyball team took one more step toward gaining its third Ohio Valley Conference championship this afternoon with a 3-0 win over No. 2 seed Jacksonville State, 34-32, 30-20, 30-27. The win was the ninth straight for the sixth-seeded Racers (17-11). Murray State will take on top seed and tournament host Morehead State tomorrow (Saturday) at noon CT.
As it did in its quarterfinal match yesterday, Murray State had great offense, hitting .324, making only 14 errors in 111 attacks, with only one error in Game 2, where the Racers hit .435.
"This was a tough match," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "It wasn't easy at all. (Jacksonville State) is a very good team.
"Tomorrow's match will be very strong. We will have to play hard to win."
Leading the way was sophomore outside hitter Paige Sun, who had a match-high 16 kills with only two errors in 28 attacks for a .500 attack percentage.
Freshman outside hitter Lilli Zhan had 13 kills with three errors in 21 attacks for a .476 percentage. Freshman middle blocker Katie Kemezys had seven kills with no errors in 12 attacks for a .583 percentage.
Sun repelled a team-high 11 digs, while junior outside hitter Kimberly Bunnage had 10. Kemezys rejected a co-match-high five blocks, while sophomore setter Nikki Wong handed out 39 assists. Bunnage served up a match-high two aces for MSU.
Jacksonville State (23-8) was paced by 14 kills from OVC Player of the Year Christina Cary, while Shari Weyer added 13 and Suzi Terrell had 12. Weyer made only one error in 25 attacks for a .480 percentage, while Cary had five errors in 30 attacks for a .300 percentage. The rest of the JSU team had 28 kills and 23 errors in 88 attacks for a .057 percentage.
Cary had five blocks, while Weyer had four. Kisha West had a match-high 13 digs, while Jessica Starck had 11.
