Racers compete with NCAA champion

The Racers kept it close in the air rifle portion of thematch, firing a 1561 out of a possible 1600, while Alaska-Fairbanks shot a 1572. The Nanooks fired a 4699 out of a possible 4800 in the smallbore competition, however, while MSU shot a 4652.
UAF had 12 perfect targets in smallbore out of the 48, while MSU had six, The Nanooks had four perfect targets in air rifle, while the Racers had two.
For Murray State, senior Morgan Hicks (Roy, Wash.) fired a match-high aggregate (combined) score of 1574 out of a possible 1600, shooting a 1176 out of a possible 1200 in smallbore and a 398 out of a possible 400 in air rifle. Hicks shot two perfect targets in smallbore and two in air rifle.
Junior Robert Purdy (Gainesville, Texas) shot a 1549, shooting an 1160 in smallbore and a 389 in air rifle, while freshman Justin Sparks (Oil City, Pa.) fired a 1548, shooting an 1158 in smallbore and a 390 in air rifle. Sophomore Alex Culbertson (Salem, Ore.) scored a 1542, shooting an 1158 in smallbore and a 384 in air rifle. Purdy and Culbertson each shot two perfect targets in smallbore.
For Alaska-Fairbanks, Joe Hein had a team-high 1573, shooting an 1181 in smallbore and a 392 in air rifle. Hein had three perfect targets in smallbore and one in air rifle.
Jamie Beyerle scored a 1573, shooting an 1181 in smallbore and a 392 in air rifle, while Matt Rawlings had a 1567, shooting an 1173 in smallbore and a 394 in air rifle. Matt Wallace fired a 1560, shooting an 1170 in smallbore and a 390 in air rifle. Rawlings had four perfect targets in smallbore -- scoring a perfect 400 in the prone position -- and one perfect target in air rifle, while Beyerle had two each in smallbore and air rifle. Wallace scored three perfect targets in smallbore.
Among the non-scoring shooters, Murray State senior Beth House (LaPlata, Md.) scored a 1544, shooting an 1161 in smallbore and a 383 in air rifle, with three perfect targets in smallbore. Junior Mike Gardner (Haslett, Mich.) had a 15113, with an 1142 in smallbore and a 371 in air rifle, while freshman Brandy Boucherie (Henderson, Ky.) had a 1506, shooting an 1125 in smallbore and a 381 in air rifle.
For the UAF non-scorers, Karl Olsson had a 1571, shooting an 1179 in smallbore and a 392 in air rifle, with four perfect targets in smallbore. Karen Gerde fired a 1532, with an 1147 in smallbore and a 385 in air rifle, with two perfect targets in smallbore, while Kim Harris scored a 1518, shooting an 1143 in smallbore and a 375 in air rifle, with one perfect target in smallbore.
Murray State will next compete at the Newkirk Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn., on Jan. 25.
