Murray State University volleyball player Abbi Gui will miss the remainder of the 2003 season after an examination of her eligibility by the athletics department discovered that the student-athlete did not provide complete information about her previous participation on international volleyball teams.
Gui, a middle hitter from Shanghai, China, has been reclassified as a senior, thus exhausting her collegiate eligibility.
After allegations were made known to the university, Murray State immediately launched an investigation, and the university removed Gui from competition. The matter was reported to the Ohio Valley Conference office and the NCAA, which has given indications that this violation is secondary in nature, and that Murray State was not responsible for the inaccurate information provided by the student-athlete.
"I want to commend Murray State University and its administrators for their full cooperation during this process," said OVC commissioner Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher. "Once informed of a potential NCAA violation, the athletics staff responded immediately and took the appropriate actions. It is only due to the University's prompt and thorough response that this situation has been brought to a timely and appropriate conclusion."
As a result of this situation, Murray State has taken corrective action. It will forfeit six conference volleyball matches in which Gui participated, remove itself from consideration as host of the OVC volleyball tournament and will not request reinstatement of Gui.
