Sophomore outside hitter Paige Sun was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region Team, based on balloting done by the region's awards committee.
Sun -- who was voted to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Honorable Mention Team by league coaches -- was the sole player from the OVC to receive the honor.
Sun, a native of Beijing, China, led the OVC with 4.67 kills per game and was fifth in the league with a .300 attack percentage. She ranked eighth in the OVC with 3.96 digs per game, and led the Racers (18-12) with 0.33 aces per game and 540 points (kills plus aces plus blocks).
"We are extremely happy that Paige was awarded this great honor," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "For all of the hard work she's done and everything she has done for this team, she is very deserving."
Sun was one of 12 players named to the All-Midwest Region Team from the four conferences that make up the Midwest Region: Ohio Valley, Conference USA, Horizon League and Southwestern Athletic. She was one of only two sophomores named to the team.
The 2003 AVCA All-Midwest Region Team consists of: Areal Bienemy, Butler; Julie DuPont, Cincinnati; Deva Fowler, Tulane; Laura Lauder, Cincinnati; Shameka Mitchell, South Florida; Sonja Percan, Louisville; Allie Smerz, Wright State; Lindsey Spoden, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Bing Sun, Louisville; Paige Sun, Murray State; Janelle Tomlinson, Wisconsin-Green Bay; and Lena Ustymenko, Louisville.
Myanna Hellsten of Cincinnati was named Midwest Region Freshman of the Year. Named to the All-Region Honorable Mention Team were: Theresa Coughlin, Marquette; Karen Fruit, Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Myanna Hellsten, Cincinnati; Lauren Holbrook, Loyola (Ill.); Jessie Theys, Wisconsin-Green Bay; and Heather Watts, Memphis.
Murray State won the OVC Championship Tournament, earning its first-ever berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Racers fell to pre-regional host and eventual bracket winner Illinois 3-0 on Dec. 5.
