Racers win 84 percent at Memphis

The Murray State women's tennis team traveled to Memphis, Tenn., for the eight-team University of Memphis/Varsity Pro Shop Invitational on Oct. 15-17, winning an unprecedented 84 percent of their matches by going 26-5.
Murray State claimed six of the 10 flight championships, two runner-up finishes and two third-place showings. Other schools that participated were Memphis, Southern Illinois, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, Saint Louis, Arkansas State and Ball State.
Senior Jaclyn Leeper went 3-0 in the No. 2 singles flight, taking the flight championship. She defeated SIU's Amanda Tallefer 6-2, 6-0, then went on to beat Arkansas State's Marusa Pogacnik 6-2, 6-2. Leeper then won over Andrea Feichtinger of Memphis in the championship match, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Jennifer Ward went 3-0 in the No. 3 singles flight, also winning the flight championship. She defeated Arkansas State's Karen Saravia 6-3, 6-1, then advanced to beat Brooke Cowie of Memphis 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Ward then defeated UTC's Bethany Everett in the championship match, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Rachael Lask went 3-0 in the No. 4 singles flight, taking the flight championship. She beat UTC's Emily Harpe 6-4, 6-1, then went on to beat Tennessee Tech's Maja Russinova 6-4, 6-2. Lask then defeated Kristin Noble of Memphis in the championship match, 6-0, 6-3.
Sophomore Casady Pruitt went 2-0 in the No. 5 singles flight, winning the flight championship. She defeated Arkansas State's Renee Branker 7-5, 6-4. Pruitt then advanced to the championship match to beat Tennessee Tech's Kay Ngiam 7-6, 6-0.
Sophomore Christina Hall went 2-1 in the No. 6 singles flight, taking second place. She defeated Arkansas State's Ashlesha Lokhande 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, then won over Christina Wieser of Memphis 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Hall then lost in the championship match to Rachel McCullogh of Saint Louis, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.
Junior Tami McQueen went 2-1 in the No. 6 singles flight, taking third place. She lost to eventual champion McCullogh 6-1, 4-6, 6-1; then defeated UTC's Francesca Guerieri 6-2, 6-0. McQueen then won the consolation championship match, beating Wieser of Memphis, 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Anna Lask went 1-1 in the No. 1 singles flight, defeating Katarina Lozanova of Saint Louis 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, then falling to Arkansas State's Marina Engelbrecht 6-3, 6-2.
