Racers battle, but fall to EIU 3-0

The Murray State women's volleyball team opened strongly against Eastern Illinois, a team unbeaten in Ohio Valley Conference play thus far. The Panthers held on to win Game 1 30-28, then went through the rest of the match, 30-15, 30-20 to earn the shutout win tonight.
Murray State was led by senior outside hitter Kimberly Bunnage, who had 12 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Allie Hunt added nine kills, while senior outside hitter Danielle Sutterer and sophomore middle blocker Katie Kemezys had eight kills apiece.
Sophomore libero served up a team-high two aces and repelled 12 digs for the Racers (4-11, 1-8 OVC). Sutterer had a team-high three blocks, while senior setter Casandra Ersel handed out 33 assists.
For Eastern Illinois (18-4, 9-0 OVC), Shanna Ruxer had 14 kills and a .619 attack percentage, while Megan Kennedy had 11 kills and a .409 percentage and Mary Welch had 10 kills and a .385 percentage.
Ruxer had seven blocks, while Erica Gerth served up three aces. Maren Crabtree handed out 47 assists for the Panthers. Crabtree also had 16 digs, while Gerth had 12 and Welch had 11.
Murray State hosts Southeast Missouri State tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena.
