Racers to host OVC Championships
2/20/2004 6:00:00 AM | Rifle
The Racers seek to avenge last year's second-place finish to Tennessee Tech, marking the first time since the OVC Rifle Championships began in 1994 that MSU did not win either the smallbore title or the air rifle title. Murray State trailed Tech by eight points in each category in last year's Championships.
Participating schools include Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee Tech and host Murray State. Morehead State and Tennessee-Martin are each bringing a mixed (coed) team and a women's team.
The smallbore competition will be held on Saturday, with one relay beginning at 8 a.m. and another starting at noon. The air rifle competition will be held on Sunday, with relays at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
"It's exciting to host this event," said MSU coach Ann Proctor. "We've been working hard, so I think we'll do well. It's nice to not have to travel."
Murray State won each OVC rifle title (based on aggregate scores, the combined smallbore and air rifle scores) from 1994 to 2000. MSU won the smallbore titles from 1994 to 2000 and the air rifle crowns in 1994 and 1995 and from 1997 through 2002.
Tennessee Tech won the OVC titles from 2001 through 2003. TTU won the smallbore titles from 2001 through 2003 and the air rifle titles in 1996 and 2003. No other OVC school has won a gun title or an aggregate title.
