Junior defensive specialist Casandra Ersel is one of six Ohio Valley Conference student-athletes to be selected to attend the 2004 NCAA Leadership Conference, scheduled to take place May 30-June 3, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort and the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Also attending from the OVC will be Eastern Illinois' Shanna Ruxer (volleyball), Jacksonville State's Arturo Nieto (men's tennis), Samford's Rick McLain (cross country/track), Southeast Missouri's Lindsay Zeiler (cross country) and Tennessee Tech's Philip Hatch (baseball).
A total of 321 student-athletes will attend the conference. The participants, who represent NCAA Division I, II and III institutions nationwide, were selected from among 1,201 nominations submitted by college and university officials who have NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills programs at their school.
The NCAA Conference is designed to enhance student-athletes' leadership and communication skills and to enable them to become more effective leaders and motivators when they return to their campuses.
During the conference, student-athletes will also discuss a variety of topics that are relative to their life as student-athletes on campus and beyond. They will discuss issues that are division-specific and consider possible solutions to the issues.
Ersel is the OVC's representative to the NCAA Stident-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as the president of Murray State's SAAC.
