Racer Girls dance team prepares for new season

"I was honored to be asked about coaching the Racer Girls," said Medendorp. "They are an awesome team, and I am glad to have this opportunity."
To prepare, Medendorp and Blackmon made a point to collaborate with co-captains Lori Upton, a junior from Franklin, Tenn., and Katie Dunman, a graduate student from Louisville, Ky.
"Both of our coaches know a lot about dance," said Upton. "I'm glad that they were both willing to talk about team goals and improving on some challenges we faced last year."
Two of the improvements planned for the upcoming season include the addition of a conditioning program and an increase in the number of dancers.
"It made more sense to have 15 members than it did 13," said Medendorp. "The formations will look more symmetrical, and it gives two more dancers the opportunity to join."
All returning members except for the co-captains must try out every year. Not only does this keep the veterans motivated, but it also provides an equal opportunity to everyone else who is trying out.
The idea for the conditioning program came in response to the number of injuries sustained last year and over the summer.
"Beyond common sense, we don't know exactly what exercises will help us and what will hurt us," said Dunman, who is recovering from a dance-related stress fracture to her foot. "It's more trial-and-error."
"We didn't think she was going to be able to dance this year," said Medendorp, "but she has really stuck with her physical therapy, and the doctor is pleased with her progress."
Aside from preventing injuries, building endurance and strength will assist in the team's performance quality.
"The better shape we're in, the more confident we will be, and the better we will perform," said Upton.
"Whatever we have to do, we'll do it," said Dunman. "I'm glad we have coaches who care about our physical well-being and our showmanship."
Tryouts for the Racer Girls will he held on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the North Gym of the Carr Health Building on the campus of Murray State University. For more information, e-mail head coach Heather Medendorp at heather.medendorp@murraystate.edu.
