Racers beat Alabama A&M at UAB

The Murray State women's volleyball team won its opening match at the UAB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., downing Alabama A&M 3-1 this afternoon. Game scores were 33-31, 26-30, 30-21, 30-21.
Senior outside hitter Kimberly Bunnage equaled her season-high with 19 kills to lead Murray State (2-2). Sophomore middle blocker Katie Kemezys and sophomore outside hitter Allie Hunt added 11 kills each.
Sophomore outside hitter Julie Lashley continued to show her skills from the serving line, serving up a match-high four aces, bringing her season total to 10, averaging 0.71 per game. Bunnage, Kemezys and sophomore outside hitter Holly Jansen each added an ace for the Racers.
Bunnage repelled a team-high 17 digs in the match, while Lashley had 13, Jansen added 12, senior setter Casandra Ersel had 10, Hunt had nine and Kemezys had eight. Kemezys had a co-match-high four blocks for MSU, while Ersel handed out a match-high 46 assists.
Bunnage notched her 10th career double-double (19 kills, 17 digs) -- her second of the season -- while Ersel claimed her fourth career double-double (46 assists, 10 digs).
For Alabama A&M (2-4), Phyllis Hetie had a match-high 20 kills, while Megan Chatman added 11. Tameeka Thompson had a match-high 19 digs, while Alex Brazelton had 13 and Princess Dixson had 10.. Chatman had a co-match-high four blocks, while Dixson had a team-high 41 assists.
Murray State will face Stephen F. Austin tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m., then host Alabama at Birmingham at 7 p.m.
