Racers place second at Newkirk

The Racers scored a 2302 out of a possible 2400 in smallbore and a 2313 out of a possible 2400 in air rifle for a total (aggregate) team score of 4615 out of a possible 4800.
Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State won the competition with a 2306 in smallbore and a 2322 in air rifle for an aggregate of 4628. Memphis was third with a 2289 in smallbore and a 2320 in air rifle for an aggregate of 4609. Host Tennessee Tech was fourth with a 2295 in smallbore and a 2278 in air rifle for an aggregate of 4573. Austin Peay competed in air rifle only, scoring a 2019.
Individually for Murray State, junior Alex Culbertson fired a 578 out of a possible 600 in smallbore and a 580 out of a possible 600 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1158 out of a possible 1200.
Freshman Cameron Hicks shot a 582 in smallbore and a 575 in air rifle for an 1157, while freshman Dan Belluzzo fired a 575 in smallbore and a 580 in air rifle for an 1155, and senior Robert Purdy shot a 572 in smallbore and a 577 in air rifle for an 1149.
Sophomore Josiah Brooks fired a 567 in smallbore and a 581 in air rifle for an 1148, while sophomore Brandy Boucherie shot a 556 in smallbore and a 567 in air rifle for an 1123, and senior Mike Gardner fired a 571 in smallbore and a 544 in air rifle for an 1115.
In the smallbore prone position, both Culbertson and Hicks fired a perfect 100 in one of their two targets. Hicks fired 99's in smallbore prone, smallbore kneeling and in one of his six air rifle targets, while Culbertson had 99's in both of his smallbore kneeling targets. Brooks had 99's in smallbore prone and in air rifle, while Belluzzo, Boucherie and Purdy each had a 99 in the smallbore prone position.
Murray State next competes at the Tennessee-Martin Invitational on Thursday. The Racers then host their annual Roger Withrow Invitational on Jan. 28-30.
