The Racers beat out several Ohio Valley Conference contenders, including Jacksonville State (third at 4620), Tennessee-Martin (seventh at 4531) and Tennessee Tech (eighth at 4499).
Host Mississippi was second at 4637, while Memphis was fourth at 4600, Texas-El Paso fifth at 4572, Murray State Blue sixth at 4532, Mississippi Blue ninth at 2307 (shot air rifle only), Birmingham-Southern 10th at 2245 (air rifle only), Mercer 11th at 2009 (air rifle only) and Arkansas 12th at 1645 (air rifle only).
Murray State won the match in smallbore, where the team shot a 2320 out of a possible 2400, the best smallbore team score in the match. The Racers were fourth in air rifle with a 2319 out of a possible 2400.
Individually, freshman Bryant Wallizer shot a 587 out of a possible 600 in air rifle and a 581 out of a possible 600 in smallbore for an aggregate of 1168 out of a possible 1200. Sophomore Cameron Hicks fired a 585 in smallbore and a 580 in air rifle for an 1165, while senior Alex Culbertson shot a 576 in air rifle and a 572 in smallbore for an 1148. Sophomore Dan Belluzzo shot a 582 in smallbore, while junior Josiah Brooks had a 576 in air rifle.
For the Murray State Blue Team, freshman Kevin Witbrodt fired a 578 in air rifle and a 568 in smallbore for an aggregate of 1146. Freshman Dan Taylor shot a 562 in air rifle and a 561 in smallbore for an 1123, while freshman Erica Meece shot a 562 in air rifle and a 545 in smallbore for an 1107. Belluzzo shot a 581 in air rifle, while Brooks fired a 575 in smallbore to complete the scoring.
Murray State will next compete on Saturday in Cookeville, Tenn., against OVC heavyweights Jacksonville State and host Tennessee Tech.
