Poor shooting, SEMO rebounding push Lady Racers to 60-40 loss

The Murray State Lady Racers stayed with visiting Southeast Missouri State for quite a while, but the Redhawks closed the game scoring the last 14 points en route to the 60-40 win.
Good free-throw shooting kept the Lady Racers (8-13, 4-6 OVC) in the game longer than its 22.6-percent (14-for-62) shooting should have, plus MSU forced 21 SEMO turnovers in the game, using defensive prowess to swipe 15 steals, the second straight game with 15 or more steals.
Southeast Missouri State held off the pesky Lady Racers, then surged ahead, scoring the last 14 points of the game over the last 6:11.
The Redhawks out-rebounded the Lady Racers 55-37, including 40 defensive rebounds.
"Any time you hold Southeast Missouri State to 60 points, that's good," said MSU head coach Joi Felton, "but we couldn't get things done in transition. We took really bad shots; Im disappointed in our shot selection tonight. We broke their press pretty easily, but once we got to half-court, we just couldn't make any baskets."
Murray State was led by sophomore guard Gerraca Matthews' 11 points, a co-game-high six rebounds and a game-high five steals, giving Matthews 12 steals in the last two games combined.
Freshmanguard Shaleea Petty and senior guard Rebecca Remington added six rebounds each, while freshman center Katie Willinger had five. Petty handed out a co-game-high four assists.
For Southeast Missouri State, Tatiana Conceicao had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Simone Jackson added 14 points and five rebounds, while Chandra Brown has 11 rebounds. Wanika Owsley had seven rebounds and four assists, while Brandi Russia had six rebounds.
Murray State continues this five-game homestand on Thursday, when the Lady Racers host Tennessee Tech at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear gold to the game.
