'Breds get first shutout of season in 6-0 loss at South Alabama

The Murray State Thoroughbreds took their first shutout of the season to the hands of sharp South Alabama pitching, 6-0, this evening.
The 'Breds (10-8) had only seven hits in the game, as South Alabama's Jeramy Simmons pitched a masterful complete game for the Jaguars (12-8), striking out nine and walking only one.
Left fielder Austin Swain went 2-for-3, while center fielder Tyler Pittman picked up a double for the 'Breds. First baseman Clint Griggs had eight putouts to lead MSU, while second baseman Seth Hudson had a team-high four assists and shortstop Phil Lopez had three.
Senior right-hander Craig Kraus (4-1) took his first loss of the season despite pitching well early on. Kraus allowed two runs in the first inning, but settled in to put up zeroes in the second, third and fourth innings. The Jaguars plated a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, Kraus's last inning of the game.
Kraus allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits, striking out three and walking one in six innings. Sophomore Charlie Wade entered in the seventh inning, allowing one run on three hits, walking one in two innings.
South Alabama was led by Tyler Jones, who went 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Ben Froemming went 3-for-5 with a run and a run batted in. David Freese scored twice for the Jaguars, while Quendon Montgomery had three RBIs and Jeff Morris had a double.
Murray State continues its three-day, three-game series in Mobile romorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m.
