'Breds slap seven doubles in 16-1 win at Arkansas-Little Rock

The Murray State Thoroughbreds pounded out seven doubles -- one short of the school single-game record -- and got right back in the win column with a 16-1 rout at Arkansas-Little Rock.
The 'Breds (8-4) broke up a scoreless tie in the third inning with four runs, then scored three in the fourth inning, five in the fifth and three in the sixth, ceding only a solo home run by UALR's Jimmy Scott in the fourth inning.
First baseman Clint Griggs went 4-for-6 with a double, two runs and three runs batted in to lead all hitters. Center fielder Tyler Pittman went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs and three RBIs, while second baseman Seth Hudson also went 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs.
Third baseman Alex Stewart had two doubles, while catcher Jason Payton had a triple and two RBIs. Designated hitter Chaz Ebert had two hits, including a double, and right fielder Lincoln Kent and shortstop Michal Perconte each doubled. Left fielder Brett Mullins scored twice for the 'Breds.
On the mound, Matt Scalfani (1-0) got his first career start at Murray State and made it a good one, allowing one run on three hits, striking out four and walking four in six innings. Jon Ross Shelton came on in the seventh and got his first save of the season, allowing one hit, striking out four and walking two in the last three innings of the game.
For Arkansas-Little Rock (8-10), Scott went 2-for-3 with a home run.
On the mound, Bryan Bearden (0-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits, striking out two in four-plus innings. Beau Brickel came on in the fifth, allowing seven runs on six hits, walking five in 1-2/3 innings. Clayton Dill finished the game, allowing one unearned run on three hits, striking out seven in 3-1/3 innings. Trojan pitchers committed nine wild pitches, three for each pitcher.
Murray State closes out the two-game series tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2 p.m.
