MSU errors lead to 10-4 loss

Four Murray State miscues and two passed balls led to eight unearned runs for Evansville in the first three innings. 'Breds pitching held the Purple Aces to two hits over the last five innings, but the damage had been done in the 10-4 loss at Evansville tonight.
Murray State (20-18) opened the game with an unearned run of its own, as Chaz Ebert led off with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Seth Hudson. Ebert went to third when Clint Griggs reached on a two-base error, then scored on a groundout to give MSU an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, however, the 'Breds committed three errors, allowing five unearned runs to score, giving Evansville (29-11) a 6-1 lead after the first inning.
Undaunted, MSU scored again in the second inning when Lincoln Kent led off with a home run to close the gap to 6-2.
The Purple Aces scored two unearned runs in the second inning with the help of an error and a passed ball, giving UE an 8-2 lead. In the third inning, Evansville scored two more runs to take a 10-2 lead.
Murray relievers held Evansville to a hit in the fifth and sixth inning, and 'Breds batters took advantage.
In the seventh inning, Hudson drew a two-out walk, then Josh Foreman singled him to third. A single by Stewart scored Hudson and cut the deficit to 10-3.
In the eighth inning, Jamie Leidolf led off with a single, then went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Leidolf scored on a double by Brett Wilson, ending the scoring at 10-4.
Leidolf went 2-for-2 for Murray State, while Tyler Pittman went 2-for-4. Stewart had two runs batted in, while Kent hit his third home run of the season and Wilson popped his second double.
On defense, Griggs had seven putouts at first base, while Hudson had four assists at second base.
On the mound, Jake Ociesa (3-4) allowed 10 runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking none in three innings. Matt Scalfani entered in the fourth inning, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking one in three innings. Charlie Wade pitched the seventh inning, facing the minimum three batters, while Pittman pitched the eighth, striking out one and walking one.
For Evansville, Robbie Minor, Dustin Knight and Ryan Barrett each had two hits, while Barrett had a double. Knight and Kyle Smith each scored twice for the Purple Aces.
On defense, Kasey Wahl had 11 putouts at first base, while Smith had five assists at second base.
On the mound, Kai Tuomi (5-2) got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walking one in five innings. Cal Stanke came on in the sixth, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three and walking one in two innings. Dan Dollison pitched the eighth inning, allowing one unearned run on two hits, striking out one, while Nathan Doty pitched the ninth inning, striking out one in facing the minimum three batters.
Murray State returns home for Ohio Valley Conference play when the 'Breds (8-4 OVC) take on Tennessee Tech (8-28, 3-8 OVC) this weekend. The Saturday double-header begins at 1 p.m. at Reagan Field, while the Sunday game also begins at 1 p.m.
