The Murray State Thoroughbreds played their final regular-season non-conference game at cross-state rival Kentucky this evening. The 'Breds were able to hold the Wildcats scoreless with only three hits over the last five innings, but the early runs did their damage in the 8-1 loss.
The third-base spot in the MSU lineup did most of the damage, as Alex Stewart went 2-for-3 with a double and the 'Breds' sole run, while James Akin went 1-for-1 with a double. Clint Griggs also went 2-for-3 for Murray State (25-28).
Jake Ociesa (3-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on no hits, walking three in one-plus innings as the starter. Jame Leidolf came on in the second inning, allowing six runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking three in five innings. Jon Ross Shelton entered in the seventh, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out one and walking two in one inning, while Michal Perconte closed out the game, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out two in one inning of work.
On defense, Griggs had six putouts at first base, while Stewart had three assists.
For Kentucky (28-24), Billy Grace was one double short of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a run and four runs batted in, including a two-run home run in the second inning. Antone DeJesus and Michael Bertram each had two hits for the Wildcats, while DeJesus, Bertram and J.P. Lowen each scored twice. Bertram also had two RBIs for UK.
On defense, Bertram had 14 putouts at first base, while John Shelby had 10 assists at second base.
On the mound, Greg Dombrowski (2-0) went the distance, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out four and walking none in nine innings.
Murray State closes out its regular-season schedule this weekend with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Samford. The Friday double-header begins at 1 p.m., while the Saturday game begins at 2 p.m.
