Kindness can be its own reward, but the Murray State volleyball team picked up two more awards, earning both Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors after hosting the Helping Hands Classic tournament, which collected needed items for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Junior middle blocker Katie Kemezys earned OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors after finishing the week averaging a league-high 5.08 kills to go with 1.38 blocks per game. Kemezys tied the Murray State record for blocks in a single match when she rejected 11 against South Alabama on Saturday. That also set a school record for most blocks in a home match. Kemezys had an attack percentage of .353, averaging less than one attack error per game.
Freshman libero Heather Norris was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week after repelling a league-high 5.54 digs per game this week.
Murray State (2-2) next competes at the Western Illinois/Pizza Hut Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Macomb, Ill. The Racers open against Southern Mississippi on Friday at 4 p.m., then face host Western Illinois on Saturday at 10 a.m. before taking on IPFW on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
