Racers second at Withrow Invite, 13 points behind winner Kentucky

Murray State's Gold team finished with an aggregate score (air rifle and smallbore scores combined) of 4654 out of a possible 4800. Kentucky's Blue team won the match with a score of 4667. Mississippi was third at 4639, followed by Jacksonville State at 4625, Kentucky White at 4603, Murray State Blue 4589, Memphis 4586, Ohio State Scarlet 4540, Missouri-Kansas City 4527, Tennessee-Martin Mixed 4523, Tennessee-Martin Women 4463, Ohio State Gray 4365, Tennessee Tech 3931, Austin Peay 2189 (air rifle only), Mercer 1881 (air rifle only) and Alabama-Birmingham 1863 (air rifle only).
"This was a great match for us," said Murray State coach Ann Proctor. "This was our highest home match of the season, which means we can use it as one of our three regular season scores toward qualifying for the NCAA championships.
"Finishing ahead of Jacksonville State this weekend boosted our confidence about the OVC Championships, which are coming up in a couple of weeks (Feb. 18-19 at Martin, Tenn.). I'm very proud of the team and all the hard work that they have been doing. Right now we are ranked among the top rifle schools in the country, and I have a great deal of confidence in them going into the NCAA Sectionals (Feb. 10-12 in Murray) and OVC Championships."
In air rifle, Murray State Gold finished with a score of 2337 out of a possible 2400, just one point behind Kentucky. Freshman Bryant Wallizer tied for fourth out of the 100 shooters with a 587, including a perfect 100 and two 99s among the six targets, while sophomore Cameron Hicks also tied for fourth with a 587, including a 99. Senior Alex Culbertson tied for 13th with a 582, including two 99s, while junior Josiah Brooks tied for 16th with a 581 with one 99.
MSU Blue scored a 2319 in air rifle. Sophomore Dan Belluzzo tied for first with a 588, including three 99s, while freshman Kevin Witbrodt tied for 10th with a 584, including a 99. Senior Brandy Boucherie tied for 22nd with a 578, including one 100 and a 99, while freshman Erica Meese was 42nd with a 569.
Individually, freshman Joe Shane shot a 565, while freshman Dan Taylor had a 563.
In smallbore, Murray State Gold finished with a score of 2317 out of a possible 2400, second to Kentucky's 2329. Hicks tied for seventh among the 85 shooters with a 583, including three 100s among the six targets. Brooks also tied for seventh with a 583, including two 100s. Wallizer tied for 14th with a 577, while Belluzzo tied for 18th with a 574, including a 99.
MSU Blue had a 2270 in smallbore, Witbrodt tied for 14th with a 577, including two 100s, while Boucherie tied for 32nd with a 567, including one 99. Culbertson tied for 35th with a 566, including one 99, while Taylor tied for 45th with a 560.
Individually, Shane tied for 43rd with a 561, including a 99, while Meece tied for 49th with a 558, including two 100s.
Murray State will next compete in the NCAA Sectionals, a qualifying competition, on Feb. 10-12 at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
