Racer Soccer Comes up Short in Must-Win Situation

The stakes couldn't have been higher for the Murray State Soccer squad. A tie was no help, only a win over Tennessee-Martin at Cutchin Field would be enough to keep the Racers alive for the final spot in the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. In end, the game was a 0-0 tie after two halves and two 10-minute overtimes. The OVC Soccer scoring system awards three points to the winner, meaning the Racers who were two points behind Jacksonville State had to have a win to jump into the 6th and final playoff spot for the OVC Tournament. The Racers who lead the OVC in shots again had a day in which they fired 16 times, five of which were on goal. Heather Jones was excellent in goal and made five saves playing all 110 minutes. The Racers have one more regular season game left next Saturday when they host Oklahoma State at Cutchin Field at 11 a.m. It will be the Racers first meeting with OSU and their second against a Big-12 Conference opponent, MSU played Nebraska in 2003 and lost 2-0 in Lincoln. The match will be the final game in a MSU uniform for seniors Heather Jones, Annie Fortier, Laura Oppegard, Tara Eby ad Leslie Whitehead. | |||
