
Volleyball Shut Out At Morehead State

The Murray State women's volleyball team took its third straight loss, a 3-0 decision at Morehead State today in Ohio Valley Conference action. The loss dropped the Racers to fourth place in the OVC standings at 8-4 in league play and moved Morehead State into a tie for second place at 9-3 with Tennessee State. Jacksonville State leads the conference at 12-0.
"We have not gotten very much from our outside hitters this weekend," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "Obviously, it's a mental thing not just with those players but with our team. We've just got to keep going and concentrate more on the things we work on in practice.
"Morehead State played really great today. They hit well and used our mistakes to their advantage. We have a lot of things to work on this week and get ready for Samford."
In the first game, Murray State (16-6, 8-4 OVC) got out to an 11-8 lead, but Morehead State (19-9, 9-3 OVC) scored seven of the next nine points to take a 15-13 lead. Kills from seniors Katie Kemezys and Holly Jansen tied the game at 15-15, but the Eagles retook the lead on a block by Erin Peak and Ashley Doscher. A kill from Jansen tied the game, and a ace served up by sophomore Alyssa Groves gave Murray State the lead again at 17-16, but Morehead State scored four straight points to push out to a 20-17 lead en route to the 30-27 win.
In the second game, the Racers took their first lead at 16-15 and a kill from junior Tara DeMage pushed it out to 17-15. After an exchange of sideouts, the Eagles scored three straight points to take a 20-19 lead, but the teams exchanged sideouts again, and a kill from Jansen gave Murray State a 22-21 lead. Morehead State scored two straight points to retake the lead, and after an exchange of sideouts, scored three of the next four points to get out to a 28-25 lead. A block by Kemezys got Murray to within 29-28, but a kill from Doscher won the game for Morehead.
In the third game, Morehead State vaulted out to a 6-1 lead and increased that lead to 14-4 en route to the 30-21 final-game win.
Murray State was led by Kemezys, who had 13 kills and hit .323, with only three errors in 31 attacks. Jansen added 12 kills, hitting .310, with only three errors in 29 attacks, and DeMage had 10 kills, hitting .261.
Sophomore Heather Groves repelled a match-high 18 digs, while sophomore Alison Mugler had 10. Freshman Cassie Chesney handed out 38 assists for the Racers.
For Morehead State, Peak had a match-high 21 kills, hitting .576 with only two errors in 33 attacks. Doscher had 10 kills and hit .318, with three errors in 22 attacks. Diana Zipp hit .375, with seven kills and one error in 16 attacks, while Ashley Murphey hit .333, with five kills and an error in 12 attacks.
Katelyn Barbour had 12 digs and 53 assists, while Lucie Klein had 10 digs. Amber Campbell had four blocks, while Barbour, Zipp and Laura Cox had three blocks each.
Murray State returns home to close out the season with a four-match homestand. The Racers host Samford (6-20, 1-11 OVC) on Friday at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena, and admission is free.
