Memphis Edges MSU Women's Tennis In Season Opener

"Memphis is a solid, experienced, team and I knew by playing a team like Memphis it would give us a very good idea where we are in our training to be ready for the conference season," said Murray State Head Coach Connie Keasling. "Experience is the key. It showed today, we have our most experience in doubles and we won the three doubles matches."
Twin sisters Anna and Rachael Lask (Louisville, Ky.) teamed up to defeat Andrea Feichtinger and Brooke Cowie, 8-4, in number one doubles. Casady Pruitt (Merrillville, Ind.) and Anne Pennington (Indianapolis, Ind.) edged Kristin Noble and Ekin Zafir, 8-7, at number two doubles. Adriana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico) and Tami McQueen (Menlo Park, South Africa) completed the sweep by beating Christina Wieser and Alex Tjioe, 8-6, at number three doubles.
Anna Lask earned the Racers a point by beating Feichtinger at number one singles by a score of 6-2 and 6-4.
"Anna is an incredible competitor," said Keasling. "This is the second time they've faced each other. Anna won the first time but played even better to win this time."
Pennington earned the only other point for Murray State in singles. The freshman beat Zafir in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2, at number four singles to earn her first collegiate singles victory.
"Anne's first collegiate victory was a stellar performance," Keasling said. "She played very well."
The key singles match turned out to be at number two singles. Cowie won the first set over Rachael Lask 6-3 but Lask won the second set, 7-5, to force a deciding third set. Cowie came back to win the decisive set 6-3.
Next up for the Racers is a trip to Indianapolis, Ind., for a pair of matches. On Friday, they will face IUPUI at 4 p.m. On Saturday the Racers square off with Butler at 9 a.m.
"I wanted to play teams that will push and challenge our doubles teams and IUPUI and Butler will do that," Keasling added.
